The eight modules
Each module is a short read in the study guide. Here is what each one covers.
Overview & specs
- Why the 0AM uses a dry double clutch instead of oil-bathed clutches
- Key figures: 250 Nm, about 70 kg, 7 + R, spread 8.1
- Selector lever basics: P R N D S, Tiptronic and the lever locks
Dual clutch & power flow
- Two gearboxes in one case: K1 odd gears, K2 even gears + R
- Solid drive shaft 1 runs inside hollow drive shaft 2
- How a dry clutch is closed by a hydraulic actuator
Shafts & gear layout
- Which gears sit on output shafts 1, 2 and 3
- How reverse is made with the R1/R2 idler
- Triple, double and single synchronisers, and the parking lock
Mechatronic unit
- What J743 combines and why it has its own oil
- The V401 brushless pump motor and the 0.2 L accumulator
- Which sensors live inside the unit (all but one)
Hydraulic circuit
- Two separate oil circuits: gearbox and mechatronic
- Half-pressure, selector and clutch valve families
- Fail-safe: no current means open clutches
Management & signals
- What each sensor does and what happens when it fails
- Why many faults leave only odd or only even gears
- Pump on/off control by G270, around 40–60 bar
Service notes
- Fluids, specs and volumes for both circuits
- When adaptation / basic settings are needed
- Special tool for gearbox removal
Self-check quiz
- 12 quick questions at the end of the study guide
- Then take the longer self-test on this page

How the torque gets through
The core idea of every DSG: one half of the gearbox drives while the other half has the next gear ready. The shift is just a handover between clutches.
Self-test · 23 questions
Answer in your head first, then tap the question. If you got it right, tick the box. Your score adds up at the bottom. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere. These questions are written by VAG DSG Solutions for practice.
Q1What is the main design difference between the 0AM’s clutches and those of the older 02E DSG?
The 0AM uses a dry double clutch. The 02E used wet clutches running in oil. Going dry cuts losses and helps fuel economy.
Q2Give the 0AM’s maximum input torque and how many gears it has.
250 Nm (184 lb-ft), with 7 forward gears and 1 reverse.
Q3What is the overall ratio spread of the 0AM?
8.1.
Q4Which clutch and which drive shaft drive the odd gears?
Clutch K1 through the solid drive shaft 1 (gears 1, 3, 5 and 7).
Q5The car is stationary with the engine idling. What state are the two clutches in?
Both open. While driving, only one clutch is closed at a time.
Q6Describe in one line how a clutch is closed.
A hydraulic actuator moves the engaging lever, which pushes the engagement bearing onto the diaphragm spring and clamps the clutch plate.
Q7Which output shaft carries gears 1 to 4?
Output shaft 1.
Q8How does reverse change the direction of rotation?
Torque goes from output shaft 2 through the R1 idler to R2 on output shaft 3. The extra gear reverses rotation.
Q9What type of synchroniser does 4th gear use?
A double synchroniser. 1st–3rd are triple, 5th–7th and R are single.
Q10The parking-lock pin lands on a tooth of the park gear. What happens next?
A pre-tension spring keeps load on it and snaps the pin into the next gap as soon as the car rolls.
Q11What two control units does J743 combine?
The electronic control unit and the electro-hydraulic control unit, in one assembly bolted to the gearbox.
Q12What kind of motor is V401, and what does it drive?
A brushless DC motor (commutated electronically) that drives a gear-type oil pump.
Q13Which fluid goes in the mechatronic circuit, and can it be mixed with gear oil?
G 004 000. It must not be mixed with the gearbox oil; the two circuits are separate.
Q14Which two valves set the pressure for each gearbox half?
N436 (half 1) and N440 (half 2).
Q15Which valve controls the 6/R gear selector?
N438.
Q16Which valves meter oil to the clutch actuators?
N435 for K1 and N439 for K2.
Q17G612 (input speed 2) fails. Which gears remain?
Half 2 is shut off, so 1, 3, 5 and 7 remain.
Q18Pressure sensor G270 fails. How does the system keep working?
The pump runs continuously and pressure is held by the pressure-limiting valve.
Q19What does G510 monitor, and what happens at 139 °C?
It monitors mechatronic temperature. At 139 °C engine torque is reduced.
Q20What oil and how much goes in the gearbox circuit?
1.7 L of G 052 171. It is a lifetime fill.
Q21After clutch or mechatronic work, what must be done before handing the car back?
Run basic settings / adaptation with a proper diagnostic tool and a battery support unit, then check with an adaptation drive and live data.
Q22Which adjustment plate is used with gearbox support 3282 for removal?
3282/59, on engine/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A.
Q23A customer says the car only drives in 2nd, 4th, 6th and reverse. Which half has been shut down, and name two sensors that could cause it.
Half 1 (odd gears) is off. Candidates include G632 (input speed 1) and G617 (clutch K1 travel), plus the half-1 valves or selector sensors. Read the fault memory before replacing anything.
